Thomas Wastcoat\Westcoat was living in Dighton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, New England when he married Hannah Reynolds.
THOMAS WESCOTT [#118], b. abt. 1702, m. Middleborough, MA 29 Oct 1723 HANNAH REYNOLDS (dau. of Electious Reynolds and Mary Pease), b. Middleborough 13 Oct 1702.
In his book, Whitman makes the claim that Thomas Wescott was born about 1702 in Warwick, Rhode Island to Jeremiah and Mary (Warner) Wescott. He drew his conclusion from similarity of names in the families.[4/186] Whether Whitman needed glasses is not given, but he was able to see things that are not readily apparent. He further makes the claim that Thomas deeded land in Warwick to his brother Jeremiah in 1725.[4/186] A search of the Warwick records revealed that no such deed exists, nor is there any record of it. Needless to say, the connection between Thomas Wescott of Middleborough and the Wescotts of Warwick is very tenuous. On the other hand there is information that may help connect the two familes. At the time of his marriage to Hannah Reynolds, Thomas was a resident of Dighton, Massachusetts.[3/4:72] Dighton is about halfway between Middleborough and Providence, RI. Furthermore there were two other Wescott men in Middleborough at the same time Thomas was there. Richard "Wascott" and his wife Bethiah had a son, Thomas, born there Nov. 26, 1717[3/8:28] and James Westcott married there June 26, 1728 to Mary Dekins.[3/5:39] It is quite likely that these two men were brothers of Thomas or were at least related and finding their parents might lead to those of Thomas. In fact, Whitman claims that Richard[4/143] and James[4/185] were brothers of Thomas and all three were children of Jeremiah. More connection with Dighton can be seen from Bristol county deeds. James Wescott of Berkley bought 50 (or 60) acres in Dighton from Peter Pitts on April 11, 1739.[2/28:307] He sold this land to John Hathaway of Freetown on Dec. 7, 1741.[2/30:330] James and Mary's children were Cornelius, 2/4/1730; Joannah, 8/29/1731; Richard, 8/14/1732; James, 2/4/1735; and Abigail, 2/4/1737.
Whether Thomas was the son of Jeremiah and Mary or not, he was almost certainly a descendant of Stukely Westcott, the immigrant. For information on Stukely and other possible ancestors of Thomas Wescott, refer to the Westcott family in the possible ancestors section.
As for Thomas, the first record of him is his marriage at Middleborough in 1723 by Peter Thatcher. On December 12, 1724 he described himself as "now living in Middleboro".[1/18:162] However he bought land on January 7, 1730-1 as Thomas Wescott of Freetown.[1/26:45] Freetown is about ten miles south of Middleborough. Thomas held this land until December 14, 1762 when he and Hannah were living back in Middleboro.[1/51:181] To further confuse the issue on December 24, 1764 "Aaron Seekins of Freetown, laborer, sold to Thomas Westcoat of Freetown, husbandman" a certain parcel of land.[2/48:65] Neither probate nor death records exist for Thomas and Hannah, but they were living on December 16, 1774 when they sold the land acquired from their son-in-law Aaron Seekins to their son Benjamin. They were again listed as residing in Freetown. Thomas was also alive on August 19, 1777 on which date he acknowledged this deed.[2/58:14]

Individual Note: THE ELECTIOUS REYNOLDS FAMILY
ELECTIOUS REYNOLDS b. abt. 1653, d. Middleborough, MA 19 Jun 1738,[3/67] aged 85, m. MARY PEASE (dau. of Robert Pease and Sarah).
Electious Reynolds is an early resident of Middleborough in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, being there by 1693 as evidenced by the birth of his son Benjamin. On 12th October 1725 the Church in Middleborough is formed. Electious Reynolds and Richard Waste are among the first members.[5/460] On 22nd September 1738 Electious Reynolds (obviously the son), Isaac Reynolds, and Ephraim Reynolds are among ten signers of a document that indicated they lived in the westerly precinct of Middleborough and that they are of the Baptist faith[5/573] and so we can surmise the same about Electious the ancestor. Isaac is, no doubt, the man who had children born in Middleborough with wife Dorothy between the years 1708 and 1725. This means he probably married just a few years before 1708 and is thus probably too young to be a son of Electious unless he is from a previous marriage. He may have been a brother to Electious however. There is another Reynolds man in Middleborough by the name of "Charles", with wife Sarah he had children born there between 1715 and 1726, and he is of the right age to be an unrecorded son of Electious. "Electious Reynolds Senr Deceased 19th June 1738 In the eighty fifth year of his age".[4/15:24]
It is not known who Electious' parents are, nor whether he is born in this Country or England, but it seems highly likely that he arrived from Salem, MA prior to living in Middleborough. There is a man there whose name is similar and who disappeared from the Salem records several years before Electious appeared in the Middleborough records. He is found in the Essex County records in three lists of country rate, i.e. tax, payers as Electious Ranalls;[10:3/380] Alextius Renholds;[10:3/386] and Allextius Rennolds.[10:3/389] He also testified as Eleckieas Ronalls in a case against Thomas Maule sworn 18th April 1682 in which he is called "about twenty-five years".[10:8/341] On 24th March 1682-3 he gave testimony as Alexius Reinolds, age 25.[10:9/55] This man married in Salem (as Allexander Renalds) to Mary Pease on 16th July 1686.[8:4/249] She is likely the daughter of Robert and Sarah Pease, b. 15 : 12m :1666[8:2/149] but may have been a daughter of John and Mary Pease. Both of these records originated in the Essex County Quarterly Court Records. The couple appears to have had a son James born in nearby Manchester, MA 15th January 1687, the father being one Eleksha Renals.[9/107]
Could this be our ancestor? Both men had a wife named Mary. Electious Reynolds of Middleborough is born about 1653-54 according to his death record whereas the man from Salem was born about 1656-58. It is not uncommon for the age to be incorrect at the time of death, especially since old people are given respect in those days so some are given to exaggerating their age. Electious of Middleborough does not seem to have had a son James, but he may have died young or moved away at an early age. Assuming that Electious is the man in Salem, then the task is to determine the correct parents for wife Mary. The Pease Family[11:Chapter4/17] from 1869 indicates Mary is the daughter of Robert and Sarah, as above. The 1924 History of Salem[12:1/371] and the 1982 Pease Family[13/24] both have Mary as the daughter of Robert's brother John. The 1982 work goes so far as to indicate that Robert's daughter married Hugh Pasco. Probate and Land records need to be examined to help conclude the real facts of all the people involved - there may be another Mary, of course, the daughter of yet another Pease man. The good news is that John's line is fairly well filled in but dull, whereas Robert's line is not filled in, but he and his wife are jailed as witches but latter acquitted.
There is a Henry Renalls in Salem by 1642 who is the right age to be Electious' father, especially given that he is the only other Reynolds in that town for some time. However it seems like he and his wife Sarah are childless. Another possibility for his parents, if Electious is from the Plymouth area, would be William Reynolds who is a resident of Plymouth by the 1630's. He married there 30th August 1638 Alice Kitson. He is in Duxbury in February 1636 and had a grant of land there. Soon after, the government allowed him to build. In 1637-8 William is presented in court for being "drunk at Mr. Hopkins his house, that he lay under the table vomiting in a beastly manner and was taken up between two". He is one of John Howland's crew on shipboard in the Kennebeck River which is attacked and two of the crew are killed after a dispute with contending traders.[1] He is probably the William Reynolds whose children had land laid out to them in Saconett after his decease.[6/6:44] If it can be proven that Electious had land in this area, this will connect him to William.
An Ellexander Reynolds appears on a 1734 list of grantees of Narragansett Township No. 4, which later became Greenwich, MA. This town no longer exists, having been flooded as part of the Quabbin Reservoir project. He is listed as living in Middleborough at the time (1734) and received the grant for services during King Phillip's War.[7/429] Since no one of this name can be found in town at any time and Bodge had difficulty reading the record, it would thus seem likely that the actual name of the grantee is Electious Reynolds. This grant is for land promised in 1676 to the soldiers assembled on Dedham Plain as they prepared to attack King Phillip's fort. If they took the fort, they are promised land in addition to their wages.
One source claims that Electious is granted land in Middleborough for his part in the war and that this is what caused him to move from Salem. This has not been found to be the case, an examination of the Essex and Bristol County Land and Probate Records needs to be made in order to determine the relationships of these men and their immediate families. Any volunteers?
