Joshua Bates' house was built in 1695, and was still standing in
1919 on South Main Street, Cohasset, (formerly Hingham)
Massachusetts.
He was a member of the first school board committee in 1728,
and was one of three people to plan for a new meeting house in
1746. "In 1749, he was taxed for one half dwelling house, one
half acre orchard, one half acre tillage, six pasture, four
slaves, and two cows." (_Bates Bulletin_, Oct, 1919.)
Joshua and Rachel Tower had 7 children:
Rachel b 14 Jul 1696 d 20 Nov 1780
Joshua b 15 Jun 1698
Bathsheba b 9 Feb 1699/70
Elizabeth b 13 Nov 1703
Solomon b 13 Apr 1706
Isaac b 3 Mar 1708
Jacob b 20 Aug 1710

Harding gives Elizabeth's birth date as 23 Nov 1703, and
Isaac's birth date as 3 Mar 1707-8, but otherwise agrees with
the _Bates Bulletin_. He cites the _History of Hingham, Volume
II_ as the source of this info.

Newton Bates claims that Joshua was born in 1671 and that he
married Rachel Tower on 15 Jan 1695-6. He confirms the
children's names and birth years above, giving Bathsheba's
birth year as 1670 and Isaac's as 1708.

Joseph was probably born in Biddenden, County Kent, England, a
village near Lydd. He came to New England with his parents in
1635 on the Elizabeth at the age of 7.
He married Esther Hilliard in Hingham, Mass. They had at least
6 children, 5 from the _Bates - Breed Ancestry_, and one
(Joshua) found in _The Bates Bulletin_, October, 1919. These
children are :
Joseph b 28 Sep 1660 d 3 Nov 1714
Caleb b 30 Mar 1666 d 18 Jun 1716(1) or 25 Aug 1747(3)
Joshua b 14 Aug 1671 d 23 Sep 1757
Bathsheba b 26 Jan 1673/4
Clement b 22 Sep 1676

Harding lists 9 children of Joseph Bates and Esther Hillard,
matching Bates' list and adding the following :
Esther b 29 Aug 1663
Hannah b 31 Oct 1668
Abigail b 16 Oct 1680
Unfortunately, Harding says that Joseph's will refers to 4 sons
and 4 daughters, which gives us one daughter too many.
He was a "Bricglayer", Constable from 1675 to 1678, Selectman
"1671_1677_ 1684_1692." He was appointed Sexton of the Parish
in 1673 and served in this capacity until a new meeting-house
was erected. He lived in his father's home in Hingham. All of
his children were born in Hingham, as well.

Newton Bates claims that Joseph was born in 1630 in England. He
married Esther Hilliard on 9 Jan 1657-8 in Hingham, MA. He
confirms the names and birth years of the children listed above
(both sets), giving Bathsheba's birth year as 1674. He was a
bricklayer, constable, selectman 4 times, and sexton of the
parish. He died 30 Apr 1706.

LATEST MARINE NEWS
Tern schooner Audrey P. Brown, Capt. Ralph Brown from Burgeo, Nfld., is
on
passage to Perambuso, with a cargo of dry fish. Her return cargo will
be
Turk's Island salt to Riverport for Ritcey Bros.
The 217 ton tern schooner Audrey P. Brown was built by J.S. Steadman
Gardner
in Liverpool, NS in 1919. On August 23, 1928, under the command of
Captain
Ralph Brown, she left Shelburne, NS for the Barbados and was not heard
of
again.
WRECKAGE FROM SCHOONER FOUND
Evidence indicating that the LaHave schooner Audrey P. Brown and her
crew of
six men, reported missing five weeks ago while on passage from
Shelburne to
Barbados, was a victim of Southern hurricanes is contained in reports
made
recently at New York by the French cable steamer Pouyer Quirtier-Dulac.
The
French cable steamer, according to a recent issue of the New York
Maritime
Register, reports leaving on October 17, about six miles south of
Gouzier,
Gaudeloupe [sic] lighthouse, picked up a life buoy marked "A.P.Brown",
LaHave, N.S.; also sighting numerous planks new in appearance floating
in
that vicinity. The craft, a three-masted schooner in command of Captain
Ralph Brown, of Petite Riviere, carried a crew of five in addition to
the
skipper, including the following: George Tancock, mate, of Dartmouth;
Stephen Fogg, cook, of Petite Riviere; Henry J. Wort, seaman, who
joined the
vessel at Halifax; William Bowen, seaman, who joined the vessel at
Halifax;
and an unidentified seaman who is believed to have signed on at
Shelburne.
Early in August the schooner, with half a cargo of lumber, sailed from
Halifax for Shelburne. At the South Shore port she completed loading
her
cargo, and on August 22 sailed for Barbados. Since then, or until the
French
cable steamer reported having picked up her life buoy, no word has been
heard of the vessel. It is believed that the vessel fell a victim to
the
hurricane which swept the waters of the southern Atlantic at the time
of her
passage.
Crew members lost from the Audrey P. Brown in 1928
